A walk in the 5th arrondissement

Welcome to the heart of Paris history, here in the 5th arrondissement! Come and discover places full of the thrilling past, energy and creativity between the Seine, the Boulevard Saint-Michel, the Jardin des Plantes and the Val de Grâce, where your Hotel Monte Cristo is located.

The 5th arrondissement; the Latin Quarter...

Visitors, like Parisians, tend to associate the 5th arrondissement with the Latin Quarter which, it is true, makes a deep impression on the district’s identity. From the Sorbonne to the Collège de France, from the Sainte-Geneviève Library to the École Normale and Lycée Henri IV schools, every street is a reminder of this quarter where enlightenment has long been embraced. The Latin Quarter’s spirit is also apparent in its countless bookstores, arthouse cinemas, cafes and cellars where live jazz is played. The Roaring Twenties and the years of the New Wave of French cinema live on here and maintain the legend.

... but that’s not all

However, the 5th arrondissement is not just the Latin Quarter. It boasts many places and monuments that bring to mind our city’s long and fascinating history, including the Cluny Gallo-Roman thermal baths, the Museum of the Middle Ages and the Roman remains of the Arenas de Lutèce. It’s also a multiculturally diverse district as evidenced by the magnificent Grand Mosque of Paris, with its traditional Moroccan architecture, tranquil gardens, hammam and tea-room. Finally, the Jardin des Plantes is a source of endless fascination for all the family with its Grand Gallery of Evolution and its remodelled menagerie.

Let our Hotel Monte Cristo team tell you all about this district that we love so much. From its cobblestone lanes on the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève to the impressive Place du Pantheon, from historic cafés to bookstores, every corner of every street is full of interest and wonder...
